Tips for Using Bottles and Trigger Sprayers

When using spray bottles to contain your cleaning supplies, it’s important to use them correctly to avoid confusion or unsafe usage. Here are a few tips for using your bottles and trigger sprayers safely and effectively.

• Always label bottles with the name of the chemical. Even if your business uses a color coding system or you believe that your staff already knows what a chemical is, you need to label each bottle in big, easy-to-read writing. It’s easy to forget or get confused if bottles are not properly labeled. Additionally, if a customer or guest in your building needs to clean something, they may go into the janitorial closet looking for a cleaner and could easily choose the wrong product if it isn’t labeled. Make sure you use a permanent marker that will not wash away if the bottle gets wet or is heavily used.
• Label the bottle with other necessary information as well. Depending on the chemical you are using, you may also want to put important instructions on the label as well. These could include which kind of stream to use, such as direct stream or broadcast spray, places or surfaces where the chemical should not be used, or the date on which the solution was mixed. Remember that when you are using a spray bottle rather than a branded, labeled product, you are responsible for putting important and necessary instructions on the bottle. They are not there already from the manufacturer.
